Canadian Show Jumping Team Named for Samsung Nations’ Cup

Ottawa, Ontario - Jump Canada is pleased to announce its team for the $75,000 Samsung Nations’ Cup, Presented by CN, to be held on Friday, March 10, during the CSIO5* CN Wellington Finale, the sixth week of competition at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.

The four members of the Canadian Show Jumping Team are Mario Deslauriers of Bromont, QC, Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, Ian Millar of Perth, ON and Chris Pratt of Belfountain, ON. They will take on 11 other countries scheduled to compete in what will be largest Nations’ Cup held to date in Wellington, one of only two Nation’s Cup events scheduled to be held in North America this year. Only two-years ago in March 2004, Team Canada captured this prestigious event.

Deslauriers, who remains the youngest athlete to ever capture the World Cup Final, has already stood in the winner’s circle in Wellington, having won the $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup II with his 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, Naomi (Cantus).

A member of the Canadian contingent in the past four Nations’ Cup events held in Wellington, Lamaze recently placed third in the $100,000 Zada Enterprises Masters Cup at the WEF riding the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion Hickstead (Hamlet). He also won the $20,000 1.50m Wellington Classic aboard Stacey Krembil’s stallion, Ramiville.

Eight-time Olympian Ian Millar started off the WEF tour by placing third in the first $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup of the season aboard his Athens mount, Promise Me (Lauriston), a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by The Bakers Dozen. This third place finish has since been matched by two more, in both week-two and week-four of the $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup series. At these two events, Captain Canada called on Susan Grange’s 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding In Style (Acord II).

This event will mark Chris Pratt’s second Nations’ Cup appearance, having also been named to the Canadian squad at last September’s Spruce Meadows “Masters”. Pratt was recently victorious in the third leg of the $25,000 WEF Challenge Cup series, where he beat out 83 other entries aboard Susan Grange’s 11-year-old Westphalien gelding Rivendell (Piano II).

In addition to the four-member Nations’ Cup Team, Canada is also invited to have two individual entries in the International division of the Nations’ Cup. Erynn Ballard of Hillsburgh, ON, and Laurie Bucci of St-Hilaire, QC, have been selected as the individual Canadian representatives, and will also act as alternates to the Nations’ Cup team.

Regarded as one of the highlights of the WEF, the Nations’ Cup is held after dark under the powerful floodlights of the Internationale Arena. The only other Nations’ Cup event in North America takes place in Canada during the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows “Masters” Tournament in Calgary, AB, on September 9, 2006.
