Ottawa, Ontario - Amanda Knowles of Toronto, ON, took top honours in the Jump Canada Medal Championship held Tuesday, November 8, at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON.
Following both regional and provincial Jump Canada Medal Finals, the top 20 finishers from across Canada were invited to attend the Championship. Among this field of 20 talented riders, Knowles, a Grade 10 Honours student at Toronto’s Interact High School, won the class by showcasing her skilful riding abilities aboard her 11-year-old Belgian-bred gelding, Robin van het Lindehof. Knowles captured the Jump Canada Medal Championship just one week after her fifteenth birthday. The Jump Canada Hunter Medal is held at Equine Canada (EC) sanctioned competitions across Canada, and contains two phases. The first phase is a hunter seat over fences, requiring riders to complete a course of at least eight fences set at a height of 1.09m (3’6”). All contestants, or a minimum of eight, are called back to complete a flatwork phase performed at the walk, trot and canter. A maximum of four riders are then asked to execute at least two tests from a list of 16. The tests can include extended trot, turn on the haunches, counter canter and change of lead with flying changes. The Jump Canada Medal is judged 60 percent over fences and 40 percent on the flat. A student of Mark Hayes, Knowles also won both the flat and the jumping phases of the 2005 Running Fox CET Medal Finals, also held at the Royal Horse Show, a feat not accomplished since 1988, before placing third overall in the final ride-off. In addition to her success in the Medal classes, Knowles has enjoyed impressive results in the show jumping ring, representing Canada at the 2003 and 2004 FEI Children’s Final as well as being the youngest member of the Silver Medal Team at the 2005 North American Young Riders’ Championship held in Lexington, VA. In December of 2004, she became the youngest rider to be named the ProChaps ‘Athlete of the Month’. À la suite des finales régionales et provinciales qui se sont déroulées de part et d’autre du pays, les 20 meilleurs cavaliers ont été invités à participer au Championnat. Knowles, une étudiante du secondaire au Toronto’s Interact High School, a remporté les honneurs du championnat grâce à son style impeccable à bord de son hongre Warmblood belge de 11 ans, Robin van het Lindehof. La jeune fille a réalisé cet exploit tout juste une semaine après avoir fêté son quinzième anniversaire de naissance. L’épreuve Médaille de chasse Saut d’obstacles Canada est offerte partout au Canada dans le cadre de concours sanctionnés par Canada Hippique. Il s’agit d’une épreuve en deux volets, dont le premier est une compétition d’assiette de chasse à l’obstacle exigeant des concurrents qu’ils franchissent un parcours d’au moins huit obstacles d’une hauteur de 1,09 m (3 pi 6 po). Tous les participants, ou au moins huit d’entre eux, sont ensuite appelés à prendre part au second volet sur le plat aux trois allures. On retiendra jusqu’à quatre concurrents à qui on demandera d’exécuter au moins deux des seize reprises prescrites comportant notamment du trot allongé, des pirouettes, du contre-galop et des changements de pied en l’air. Soixante pour cent des points de cette épreuve sont attribués au volet à l’obstacle et quarante pour cent au volet de plat. C’est Mark Hayes qui est l’entraîneur d’Amanda Knowles, une jeune cavalière qui promet puisqu’elle a également remporté lors du Concours hippique Royal le volet de plat et le volet à l’obstacle de la finale Running Fox Médaille de l’EEC (un exploit accompli la dernière fois en 1988), pour finalement se classer troisième au dernier tour. En plus de ses succès dans les épreuves Médaille, Knowles a obtenu de très bons résultats en saut d’obstacles, puisqu’elle a représenté le Canada en 2003 et 2004 lors des finales des concours FEI pour Enfants. Elle a également participé en 2005 aux Championnats nord-américains Jeunes Cavaliers tenus à Lexington, VA, où elle était la plus jeune membre de l’équipe médaillée d’argent. En décembre 2004, elle est devenue la plus jeune cavalière à recevoir la distinction d’Athlète ProChaps du mois. Saut d’obstacles Canada est le comité national responsable de toutes les activités de compétition en chasse, saut d’obstacles et équitation, depuis le niveau de base jusqu’au sport international.
