Ottawa, Ontario -- Samantha Taylor of Richmond, BC finished seventh out of 41 competitors at the 2006 Jersey Fresh CCI3* Three Day Event at the Horse Park of New Jersey in Allentown, NJ, June 1 – 4.
Competing for the first time at the CCI3* level, Taylor rode her eight-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Livewire. The pair got off to a bit of a rocky start, finishing dressage in 31st place after a score of 65.6. However, they rocketed up the standings after receiving no jumping faults and just 17.2 time faults in the cross-country phase, set by renowned course designer John Williams (USA). Next up was the show jumping where the duo held their placing after receiving 12 jumping faults, but a clear time to finish with a total score of 94.8. “I was ecstatic with Livewire’s performance. It was his first time at the three star level and he was amazing,” exclaimed Taylor, who felt that the cross-country course rode beautifully despite the wet footing after humid weather brought on thunderstorms. “There were a few little mistakes made on my part and we need to work on dressage, but overall I was thrilled.” Sandra Donnelly of Calgary, AB finished in 17th place aboard her nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding Whiz Kid. A dressage score of 58.5 placed them 24th, but they moved up to 16th place after receiving no jumping faults, but 42 time faults in the cross-country. After incurring 20 jumping and three time faults in show jumping, the pair dropped one placing to finish 17th with a final score of 123.5. “I had a pretty inexperienced horse, it was his first three star,” commented Donnelly. “I was happy with how he performed. It was our best ever dressage and he jumped clean cross-country in far from perfect conditions.” It was also the first time competing at the three star level for Stouffville, ON native Wendy Southam and her 14-year-old Zangersheide mare Ruba Z, who finished in 23rd place with a final score of 168.3. Canadian Mike Winter, who currently resides in Newnan, GA also contested the CCI3*. A stellar dressage performance put him in fifth place aboard Kingpin, but after an unfortunate fall of horse and rider in the cross-country phase, the pair was eliminated. In the CCI2* division, Kelly List of Bracebridge, ON was the top placed Canadian, finishing 11th out of 33 competitors aboard her eight-year-old Thoroughbred gelding Minstral. A dressage score of 62.7 placed them 18th, but after jumping clear in cross-country and receiving a mere 4.4 time penalties, the pair moved up to eighth place. In show jumping they received 12 jumping faults, but no time faults were added, bringing their total score to 79.1. Taylor finished close behind in 12th place, this time with Tina Llewellyn’s 12-year-old mare Lucinda. The pair completed the event with a final score of 80.6. “It was a great weekend. I did some intense training with David O’Connor a few weeks leading up the event and it really paid off,” explained Taylor. Also finishing the CCI2* division was Kathryn Morgan of Surrey, BC who’s final score of 91.1 earned her 16th place aboard Dagmar Fortmuller’s 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding Galileo. The winner of the Jersey Fresh CCI3*, with a final score of 66.6, was American rider Jan Byyny, riding Task Force. At the top of the CCI2* division was fellow American Kate Ditchey aboard Belmont. Il s’agissait de la première fois que Taylor prenait part à une compétition de ce niveau. Malgré des débuts un peu incertains en raison de leur 31e place en dressage (65,6), le couple a remonté en flèche après n’avoir encouru que 17,2 pénalités pour dépassement de temps en cross-country, une épreuve signée par le réputé traceur de parcours américain John Williams. Taylor et Livewire ont ensuite récolté 12 points en jumping et aucune pénalité de temps, ce qui a porté leur score final à 94,8. « Je suis absolument enchantée de la performance de Livewire. C’était la première fois qu’il compétitionnait au niveau CCI3* et il a été formidable », a déclaré la cavalière, ajoutant que la pluie et les orages avaient détrempé la piste du cross-country mais qu’il se franchissait quand même pas trop mal. « J’ai fait quelques petites erreurs, et je dois maintenant me concentrer sur le dressage, mais dans l’ensemble je suis ravie. » Sandra Donnelly de Calgary en Alberta, a pris la 17e place sur son Hanovrien de neuf ans, Whiz Kid. D’abord classés 24e avec un résultat de 58,5 en dressage, ils sont remontés au 16e rang avec un cross-country sans faute, mais un dépassement de temps leur a toutefois coûté 42 points. En jumping, le couple a renversé quelques obstacles et alourdi son résultat de 20 points auquel se sont ajoutées trois pénalités de temps, ce qui les a fait redescendre en 17e position avec un score final de 123,5. « Mon cheval n’avait pas beaucoup d’expérience puisqu’il compétitionnait au niveau trois étoiles pour la première fois », a commenté Donnelly. « Je suis heureuse de ce qu’il m’a donné car nous avons eu notre meilleure note de dressage à vie et il a franchi le cross sans anicroche dans des conditions qui étaient loin d’être parfaites. » C’était également une première au niveau trois étoiles pour Wendy Southam de Stoufville en Ontario et sa jument Zangersheide de 14 ans, Ruba Z, classées 23e avec 168,3. Le Canadien Mike Winter, qui vit actuellement à Newnan (GA), a aussi concouru dans ce CCI3*. Une brillante prestation en dressage sur la selle de Kingpin lui a donné la 5e place mais le couple a malheureusement fait une chute dans l’épreuve de cross-country et il a été éliminé. Kelly List de Bracebridge en Ontario a été la meilleure Canadienne dans la division CCI2*. Elle a pris le 11e rang sur 33 compétiteurs à bord de son pur-sang de huit ans Minstral. Placés au départ en 18e position avec un résultat de 62,7 en dressage, leur cross-country aurait été parfait n’eut été d’une petite pénalité de temps de 4,4. Le couple était donc huitième à ce moment avant d’encaisser 12 points en jumping sans aucun dépassement de temps toutefois, ce qui a porté leur résultat total à 79,1. Taylor était tout près derrière elle au 12e rang, cette fois sur Lucinda, la jument de 12 ans de Tina Llewellyn. Ce couple a obtenu un résultat final de 80,6. « Ce fut un week-end fantastique. David O’Connor a été mon entraîneur pendant les quelques semaines précédant le concours et ça s’est reflété dans ma performance », a indiqué Taylor. Kathryn Morgan de Surrey en Colombie-Britannique a également pris part au CCI2*. La cavalière s’est mérité la 16e place ainsi que la note de 91,1 sur Galileo, le Hanovrien de 13 ans de Dagmar Fortmuller. Le gagnant du concours CCI3* Jersey Fresh avec un score de 66,6 était l’Américain Jan Byyny sur Task Force. En CCI2*, c’est sa compatriote Kate Ditchey qui a été victorieuse sur Belmont.
